Most families in the RGV wait too long to ask for help. They wait until there's a fall, a hospitalization, or a crisis. These 5 signs are your early warning system.
If your parent used to shower daily but now goes days without bathing, has unwashed or wrinkled clothing, or shows signs of dental neglect — this is one of the first and most reliable signals. Hygiene changes often indicate difficulty with balance, pain, cognitive decline, or depression. It's rarely about preference.
Check the refrigerator and pantry. Are there expired foods? Is the kitchen clean? Is your loved one eating real meals or just snacks? Unintentional weight loss of 5–10% of body weight is a serious medical red flag. It often happens when someone can no longer safely prepare meals, forgets to eat, or has difficulty swallowing.
Open the medicine cabinet or check pill organizers. Are there missed doses? Is your parent taking the right pills at the right times? Medication mismanagement is a leading cause of hospitalizations in older adults. A caregiver can provide reminders, organize medications by time, and flag concerns to the family or physician.
One fall over 65 significantly increases the risk of another — and of serious complications like hip fractures, which in the RGV's 65+ Hispanic population carry significant mortality risk. Watch for: unexplained bruises, reluctance to walk without support, new furniture or walls used as handholds, or a sudden preference for staying seated. If they've already fallen and not told you, they might be afraid of losing independence.
Is your loved one less engaged? Missing church, skipping family dinners, not answering calls? Social isolation accelerates cognitive decline and is a major risk factor for depression in RGV seniors. Watch also for: forgetting recent conversations, repeating the same story within minutes, getting confused about the date or time, or difficulty with familiar tasks like paying bills or operating the stove.
